One of the hardest things about communicating in the remote workplace is the lack of nonverbal cues. And the thing is, we often don’t realize the impact the lack of those cues is having on the way we relate to one another.
I have to admit, lately I have become a bit focused, some may say obsessed, with nonverbal communication. I am teaching a Nonverbal Communication class at the same time I am doing research into the virtual workplace. The overlap between the two is unexpected and fascinating. I have learned from conversations with students in the classroom and from work with individuals in remote organizations. The virtual workplace is not an easy place to navigate.
I would love some of your thoughts, examples, and ideas on how to compensate for the missing nonverbal cue.
