Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just watch our remote employees to make sure they were working hard?
A study led by Chase Thiel out of the University of Wyoming suggests that electronic surveillance designed to catch rule-breakers actually has the exact OPPOSITE effect. More monitoring results in
⬇️ lower motivation
⬇️ lower personal agency
⬇️ less responsibility
↩️ a changed moral compass
⬆️ and a greater desire to break the rules.
As we see changes to trust take place in government and remote workplaces, it is worth considering the price we pay when we don’t value TRUST.
