So, you decide to compromise. You are allowing people to work remote 3 days a week, but, because you are sure true cohesiveness only happens in a face-to-face environment, you are still requiring them to be in-office 2 days a week.

Well, that’s something.

But here is the management tip for today: cohesiveness doesn’t magically happen just because people come into the office.

If you are going to go to the trouble of demanding that people come to the office, make it worth it. Be intentional about using those in-office days to connect, support, and innovate. Use that time to accomplish goals you struggle with accomplishing online. For instance…

·     One-way sharing of information? Do it online.
·     Collaborating, especially on projects that are difficult, emotional, or require innovation and creative energy? Do it face-to-face.
·     Working at your desk? Do it online.
·     Building teams by providing fun, social events? Do it face-to-face.
·     Quick 15-minute check-ins with individuals? Do it online.
·     Supportive, more in-depth conversations with employees? Do it face-to-face.

The point is, if you choose a hybrid workplace, don’t miss out on the opportunities to leverage the strengths of both types of communication. Be intentional about developing workplace rhythms that really do create greater cohesiveness, employee satisfaction, and productivity. Because, let’s face it, all remote and all face-to-face is no longer the norm. It’s time to develop best practices for what the new hybrid workplace is going to look like.
